Greer, a Prime Minister’s Scholarship internship recipient, has been able to combine property and netball in her internship as a member of Bayleys property management team.
The internship has come at an important time for Greer who sustained a season ending ACL rupture in the opening game of the 2025 ANZ Premiership.
Having moved from the Tactix to the Auckland Stars for the 2025 season, Greer was delighted to receive an internship back in her hometown with one of New Zealand’s leading full-service real estate companies.
“I began my internship at the beginning of the year and was managing it alongside netball throughout the pre-season. However, when I got injured it helped me refocus, created a routine and sparked a new motivation off the court,” says Greer.
The internship itself is also proving to be a great learning opportunity in a sector away from sport.
Greer says that at first it seemed like a totally unfamiliar experience. “I felt like I didn’t know anything and it was hard to start from a zero base of knowledge. But with the support of my Bayleys colleagues I’ve learnt how and where to find everything that is needed to take a property to market – and that’s no mean feat with more than 10 databases to check out, each containing different aspects of a property.”
“It’s a mindset switch going from netball knowledge into business and property. But Bayleys have created an awesome learning environment. I’ve learnt how to manage property, connect with different personalities, deal with conflict, learnt new databases and how to uphold a healthy home.”
Bayleys National Director Commercial and Residential and Greer’s manager in her internship, Will Alexander, says Greer has been a great fit with the team.
“She has applied her work ethic and knowing what it takes to be successful to our business. Her discipline, focus, ability to get things done, make plans to achieve goals and execute reflect why she is successful in her sporting life.”
Will says it was a no brainer for Bayleys to take on an intern through HPSNZ’s PM’s Scholarship programme.
“Sport is in Bayleys’ DNA and what we are seeing in Greer demonstrates how good the initiative is. We’ve also seen how important the internship is for Greer as she deals with her injury. What we’re seeing is that it is giving her something else to focus on, something to put her energy into.”
Both Greer and Will say the success of an internship is about working together and forming a partnership.
“Bayleys knows netball is my priority but the internship is a great opportunity to grow and learn off the netball court. I’m learning a whole new sector of the workforce which is making me step outside my comfort zone and it’s cool to have a job that’s getting my foot in the business/property sector while I’m playing netball.”
Will says that it has got to be a partnership from the start. “Balancing and matching, along with flexibility, are important to make an internship with a high performance athlete work.”
And what will be music to Greer’s ears, Will says she is a future superstar of the industry. “It wouldn’t surprise me if Greer ends up selling half of Auckland’s properties in the future and if I can be part of that journey that’s great.”
