Wellbeing

Wellbeing is everyone’s right and responsibility. High performance sport brings unique pressures and athletes need to find ways to live with purpose, balance and meaning that enable them to thrive in this environment.

Performance Life Coaches work with athletes to create wellbeing plans for sport and life. These plans are continuously evolving with athletes and their support team.

Athletes are encouraged to consider their physical, spiritual, emotional and social needs, and what each area looks like when they are thriving (see Te Whare Tapa Wha). Through this process athletes will learn how to connect with the right support at the right time.

One important factor in the promotion of positive wellbeing is give back. The benefit of connecting athletes to their communities is to build gratitude and resilience which are key factors for wellbeing. The team facilitates give back opportunities for athletes.

“By knowing yourself better through values and strengths work, I was able to focus on the right areas and have better direction in both sport and life.

The HPSNZ internship programme helped me find and experience what I wanted to do after sports life, which makes the end (when it comes) less scary.”

Ben Tuimaseve – Paralympian, Athletics NZ

“As a young sailor I found myself between campaigns with no clarity of whether I would be able to fulfil my dream of representing New Zealand at an Olympics. With support from my Performance Life Coach, I was able to stay focused on developing my off-water transferable skills and exploring my non-sporting identity. This work helped me to transition into a new Olympic campaign, and also to prepare for life after sport by studying in a field that I am passionate about.”

Erica Dawson – Olympian, Yachting NZ
