International focus on NZ Women in High Performance Sport programmes

HPSNZ’s Te Hāpaitanga coaching programme and Residency Experience have recently caught the attention of the international Leaders Performance Institute.

The lead article in the December 2024 report, entitled A Female Lens on Performance: What it takes to help women and girls thrive in elite sport, features interviews with Te Hāpaitanga lead, Jody Cameron, WiHPS lead Helene Wilson and leading Cycling NZ coach, Elyse Fraser.

A series of international connections resulted in Helene and Jody being invited to submit an article on the development of women coaches within a coaching programme and also the creation of real world work experience for women to hone their craft within a high performance environment.

Helene says she and Jody attended a Women in Sport hui in the UK in 2023 at which she presented on her approach to shifting the culture of a women’s sports team, namely the Northern Mystics, through relating to her own experience as a coach.

“The response to that presentation was very positive and then a year later I was on a panel at an international conference relating to the development of women in high performance sport and the development of female athletes,” says Helene.

She joined forces with Jody for an interview with the Leaders Performance Institute and the resulting story offered an insight into how HPSNZ has developed an internationally significant series of opportunities for women.

“Adding the story of Elyse’s journey from former elite road cyclist to Cycling NZ’s Endurance Development coach really brings to life what we are doing in New Zealand.”
