Wellbeing initiatives take shape

As much of the high performance sport sector transitions out of the 2024 pinnacle event cycle, the Wellbeing Programme is ramping up initiatives to help NSOs and their athletes as they look to the future. NSO Wellbeing Leads from a range of sports – hockey, equestrian, snow sports, cycling, swimming and athletics – came together with representatives from HPSNZ and Sport New Zealand for a two day hui earlier this month. The majority of the hui was devoted to activities and discussion designed to support the Wellbeing Leads and the embedding of wellbeing systems within their respective NSOs and sports more broadly.

HPSNZ’s Wellbeing and Engagement Lead, Dr Toni Minniti, says the group discussed and planned for forthcoming wellbeing initiatives including the Wellbeing Scan and Onboarding Guidance to be widely shared in early 2025.

“Current projects within the Community of Practice such as education, training and development initiatives were shared by Wellbeing Leads to highlight learnings and innovation,” says Toni.

“We also began to establish common components needed to meaningfully deliver on wellbeing policies, projects and practices that will be used to inform a planning and implementation guidance document which can then be shared more broadly with all NSOs.”

Over and above the hui, the Wellbeing Programme team has developed new resources and will continue to build these out.

Toni was also recently a guest contributor to the One Track Mind podcast series which looks at issues impacting the future of sport.  In the podcast Toni discussed the concept of wellbeing, how it is measured, its relationship to performance and who is responsible for it in sporting organisations.
