IWG World Conference on Women & Sport 2022

Held in Auckland in November 2022, the IWG World Conference on Women & Sport, was the largest gathering on women in sport ever held globally.

The shear breadth and depth of topics and the ability to reconnect with people across this global community was inspiring. Many attendees were blown away with insights from world leading experts on women’s sport, which research confirms is the largest growing sports market in the world.

There were multiple discussion forums about high performance environments, policies for coaching, wellbeing in high performance, the importance of male allies…the list goes on. All stimulating especially when hearing how other countries have addressed some of the challenges they have for women in sport.

HPSNZ’s workshop on Te Hāpaitanga was well received by an audience from around the world intrigued with our holistic approach incorporating Te Ao Māori principles for coach development. Jenny Armstrong (Yachting NZ) and Mel Bosman (Tasman Rugby Union) shared their story authentically about this life changing experience.

In addition, HPSNZ produced a 10-minute Lightning Talk video on our Women in HP Sport Residency Experience entitled ‘What happens when you make space in the system’.

While we were humbled by the progress NZ has made, hearing the stories and experiences of women around the world has launched new ways of thinking about all we do from business operations and media to performance support, wellbeing and partnerships. It’s about thinking laterally about how we can work together to create high performance experiences that enable everyone to thrive.

One final thought from the conference “The actions you take today will shape the ancestors we become” is something we can all reflect on.
