Understanding Psychology Applied in Sport

Psychology applied in sport focuses on improving both wellbeing and performance in sport. Practitioners must be registered psychologists, with training in mental/brain health, athlete development, performance enhancement, and the wider systems that impact people in our ecosystem.

What Guides Our Work

At the heart of our approach are these key principles:

  • We take a brain-first approach to health and performance as the brain manages and maintains health and human performance.
  • We aim to improve the environments athletes train and compete in.
  • We focus on the whole person, performance in sport and wellbeing in life.
  • We tailor support to each athlete’s context, from daily training to major events.
  • We value high-quality data to guide decisions, prevent issues, and plan for future needs.

How Psychology Creates Change

Our team uses a variety of strategies to support athletes and teams:

Valuing Autonomy and Culture

We protect athletes’ sense of choice and respect their cultural identities. This helps build motivation, trust, and deeper engagement in their own growth.

Personalised Performance Planning

We help athletes build personalised strategies to perform under pressure, based on their unique strengths and areas for development.

Brain Health and Resilience

We teach athletes how to improve their brain health, manage stress, and build resilience skills that benefit them both in and out of sport.

Whole-Person Development

We support athletes in finding value and balance in both sport and life, with a focus on holistic wellbeing.

Team-Based Collaboration

We work across disciplines, alongside coaches, medical teams, and other professionals, to build shared understanding and strong communication.
